Re-inventing the old factory

Swanky Shipping Container Sjakket House For Immigrant Youth Used to be a Moldy Factory

by Tafline Laylin

The hipster Sjakket House for Copenhagen’s immigrant youth used to be a rundown and moldy factory building, but it also had a historic twin-peak design that the city wasn’t prepared to lose. JDS Architectswas tasked with re-inventing the old factory without destroying the gables – which is exactly what they did. By gutting the interior space and adding a little secret gathering space in between the two vaulted buildings, JDS created an inspiring place for the cool cats of Copenhagen to hang.

The interior was cleaned up and partially refit but very little was done to alter the existing architecture. Aside from creating the giant sports hall inside, and an exterior roof deck that has become something of an “oasis,” a shipping container was pitched on top of the gables and converted into a studio for Ghetto Noize Records. This stunning, sustainable renovation has become a coveted section of Copenhagen’s industrial skyline.
